World of abayas: updated

Tim is back in Riyadh for a few days, and since I couldn’t go with him, has taken some pictures for me as I was curious to see how it now looks and what has changed.

This was taken on the Diplomatic Quarter, where we lived for three years. When we moved there, most of the women on the DQ were foreigners so rarely wore abayas, but a lot of Saudis have moved in, and now abayas seem to be commonplace there. They certainly are more decorated and colorful than they used to be – even on the Saudi women in this picture -- one of the many changes that have taken place in Saudi Arabia since we left.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.

Rose tinged, posted earlier:

I see that most have some decorative element. A little step taken. V

Interesting. I thought the DQ was just for diplomats. I take these are local Saudis? V

Very interesting. The different designs and level of face coverings seems very diverse. I saw a woman recently in Rochester completely covered except for her eyes and thought she must be extremely devout to dress like that when she doesn’t have to by law. V

it would seem that at least the women don't have to cover their faces or hair..
