A Washington, D.C., institution

This is Litteri, an Italian foods retailer that has been in business forever in the District. When we bought our house in Washington 30 years ago, we used to drive here to find Italian ingredients that weren’t available anywhere else. Now you can find all of it in regular supermarkets everywhere. It was located in what I’d call a less than desirable part of town, but now the nearby Union Market has been restored, and the area has become quite popular and redeveloped. Sadly, I don’t think Litteri will be able to survive much longer.

It's sad to see the old places being replaced, but from the looks I imagine that it was quite the adventure going into that neighborhood 30 years ago. Very nice, and colorful, capture, Helen. V

Fantastic color and capture of squares.. It’s sad so many mom and pop stores can’t compete with the chains. V

likely a rootsy business worth supporting....not sure about those overly long subs though..

A sad story but an all too common one, I'm afraid. I love little specialty sores like this. Great shot of it. ~V~

Interesting back story to this intriguing shot. It would be sad if they have to close after all this time. V

The Italian flag is a give-away hint! Get a fill of your italian spices before it closes.
