New old transportation in Tokyo

I never saw a scene like this in Tokyo during the years we lived there; maybe it’s a new tourist thing or is just considered "in" to do now. The man doesn’t look Japanese to me, and in fact I have a hard time imagining any Japanese person doing this kind of work. It looks like the people are in traditional dress, perfect for this kind of transportation.

Long way down, posted earlier:

That looks like an awful job. I couldn’t imagine pulling people around all day like a horse. He captured the scene well. V

I like both the economic structure of the rickshaw and the muscly looking driver

I'm so glad that Tim posted this photo.!!! I'm looking forward to experiencing this (as a Tokyo visitor). Supposedly, many of the rickshaw shahu are Japanese college students working their way through school. Girls do this job, too. They say that it gives them both spending money and good exercise. Rickshaws today are part of a nostalgic rush for the Japanese rediscover the romance of their own culture. Currently, Asakusa is the only place in Tokyo that rickshaws are allowed to operate. However, rickshaws are being used in many tourist areas of Kyoto. This "mode of transportation" is supposed to also expand more in Tokyo in the future.

An interesting image. I would not want to pull that thing around town!
