Having lived in Japan for seven years, I can say without any doubt that this is a very Japanese scene. Tim had titled the photo “Kawaii,” meaning “cute,” although it’s usually pronounced “kawaiiiii” in a high voice. Kawaii is also the culture of cuteness in Japan and can refer to items, humans and non-humans that are charming, vulnerable and childlike.
