Sahraa is an incurable digger. She had a favorite hole in Budapest that she enlarged every day, only to be patiently filled in by the gardener, who said he didn’t mind and that she was only “exercising her muscles.” Then she dug holes in tree boxes at the entry to our house in Riyadh. The gardener finally topped them off with rocks. Now she has gone to work on our small garden in Washington. She recently dug up the area in the middle of my peonies and re-dug a huge hole by a holly bush, neatly exposing the roots and brick wall. Tim fills the holes in, but she can’t seem to resist the urge and undoes his work within a few days. At least she left my herbs standing in this instance. The peony wasn't so lucky last year.
