Homesteader Emanuel Manis dug up a mastodon here in 1977. A weathered monument marks the spot on a dead-end rural road.

The mastodon was accidentally unearthed by Emanuel as he was digging a trench with a backhoe. The animal had apparently collapsed on the spot and died of old age, but also showed evidence of being scavenged by early humans.
