Tree of Life

Kalaloch, WA

The Tree of Life still stands as a living symbol of resilience on the edge of the Pacific.

Just north of Kalaloch Lodge, near the campground, stands one of the most iconic and beloved landmarks on the Olympic coast: the Tree of Life. For decades, this extraordinary Sitka spruce seemed to defy gravity, suspended between two eroded bluffs with its roots exposed and reaching into open air.

Time, tides, and fierce coastal storms have now taken their toll. The ground beneath the Tree of Life continues to erode, and its once-vibrant branches show signs of decline. While its future is uncertain, the tree remains a powerful symbol—of resilience, impermanence, and the raw beauty of nature left to follow its own course.

Visitors still come to pay quiet tribute to this natural wonder, capturing one last glimpse of a living legend before it returns to the earth and sea that have shaped it for so long. Visit Kalaloch Lodge to experience the coast’s ever-changing landscape, where even endings can be beautiful.
