Zoobomb Bikes Monument

Portland, OR

They aren’t Hell’s Angels. They’re Zoobombers, who ride mini-bikes (kid’s bikes) down the hills from the Portland, Oregon zoo, to the annoyance of the city’s police.

Now the mayor of Portland has dedicated an official city monument to Zoobomb, topped by a gold-plated mini-bike. It’s designed so that “loaner” bikes can be stacked around it for use by other Zoobombers. The stack is called a pyle and the monument The People’s Bike Library of Greater Portland by the way-radical bikers.

Zoobomb enthusiasts insist that its downhill antics are good clean fun and that the group promotes sharing and eco-friendly transportation. This goes over well in Portland, which rivals Berkeley, California, as the city most open to unorthodox ideas. But while Berkeley only has a monument to its past counterculture glory, Portland has pedaled to the forefront of the youth movement with its 20-foot-tall, wind-swaying, gold-mini-bike-topped Zoobomb Monument.
