World Globe 9/11 Memorial

Tacoma, WA

Officially titled the "Harbor Flag Project Memorial Globe," this eight-foot-high steel Earth was unveiled on the one-year anniversary of 9/11. Tacoma's ten sister cities and five sister port cities are marked on the Globe, an embellishment that showed "unity to the global community" according to Tacoma. Over the ensuing years, the Globe has grown a bit stained.

Next to the Globe stands a 12-foot-high metal "Peace Pole," unveiled in September 2021. It replaced an earlier wooden Peace Pole that had rotted, and is engraved with peaceful wishes in the 13 languages of all those sister cities. Its tip was designed to look straight from certain angles -- symbolizing the "tipping point" of peace -- and bent from other angles, symbolizing that peace isn't easy.
