An old 50-foot-tall grain silo, originally coated in 20 tons of real wax, now wrapped in imitation wax topped with an electric flame. First lit on Mother's Day, 1971 to ensure peace around the world.
The Peace Candle of the World has been burning with noble intentions for 50 years, and the city council of Scappoose intends to keep its flame lit. However, a story in the Columbia County Spotlight reports that the property on which the candle stands -- which once had a candle factory until it burned down -- has been sold to developer who plans to build apartments. According to the Spotlight, the city manager has vowed to protect the Candle. It's unclear what the city would do if the developer refuses to cooperate; moving the candle, a 50-foot-high silo covered in tons of imitation wax, seems unlikely. Perhaps Scappoose could simply build a new one.
