A large, colorful, anatomically correct human heart on a pole was created by artist Chuck Fitzgerald in the early 2000s. The pole has a sign, "Hearts are bigger in Puyallup."
The Open Heart has been in Puyallup since 2001. Chuck had undergone surgery, then was inspired to build the heart and display outside the office of a local doctor. The doctor has since retired, but the heart is still there, and Fitzgerald gave it a thorough cleaning in June 2023.
