The film Napoleon Dynamite, chronicling a few weeks in the life of a high school geek, was released on June 11, 2004 and rapidly became a cult classic. It was shot almost entirely in and around the town of Preston.
The tetherball court is significant in Napoleon's progress through the movie - starting with him playing alone and failing to get Summer to play with him, ending with him reconciling with Deb and playing with her (after stating he caught her a delicious bass... too smooth). The tetherball in the movie was portable and mounted to a concrete-filled tire, whereas the pole is now permanently installed in the concrete on the playground. Perhaps to discourage theft of a movie souvenir?
