Kitt leans against the outside wall of Ellensburg's public library. The casual coyote was sculpted from aluminum in 1998 by the late Richard Beyer, who also created Waiting for the Interurban in Seattle.
Kitt's thousand yard stare may be the result of drinking too much coffee, and indeed his empty right hand looks designed to hold a mug big enough to satisfy a seven-foot-tall coyote. Other distinguishing features of Kitt include his pot belly, sandals, loosely knotted necktie, and trousers that are fashionably too short. His name, a truncation for Ellensburg's Kittitas County, was suggested by local school children. The townspeople show their affection for Kitt by frequently dressing him in silly outfits.
