Peopeomoxmox (Yellow Bird) was born prior to the arrival of Lewis and Clark. He became head chief of the Walla Wallas, as well as a leader among inland tribes. At the 1855 Treaty Council, he resisted the reservation policy and, with Cayuse leaders, helped win a separate reservation for the Walla Walla, Cayuse, and Umatilla Indians. He was later killed and his body mutilated by Oregon Volunteers during the Battle of Walla Walla, while negotiating for his people under a flag of truce. His place of burial is unknown.
