Henry Christ
Henry Christ was a man of prominence at Reading in 1760, and officiated as
sheriff of Berks County for the years 1761 and 1762. He showed a proper
enthusiasm in the first movement at Reading for the Revolution in 1774, and
was appointed by Edward Biddle as one of the Committee on Correspondence.
In 1776 he raised and commanded a company of rifle-men in the campaign of
Long Island, though not actually engaged in the battle. In 1777 he was
placed on the Committee to collect arms, &c.
Upon his return, he was appointed a justice of the peace of Reading,
and in 1784 he was reappointed for another term of seven years. While
holding this office he also served as recorder, register and clerk of the
Orphans' Court of the county from 1777 to 1789, accepting the last named
office for the year 1789; and he was also clerk of the Quarter Sessions for
1779.
He died at Reading in August 1789, and left a large estate. He had
four sons--Henry, Jacob, John and Daniel--and six daughters-- Barbara
(married to John Gallentine), Maria (married to George Spangler), Catharine
(married to Capt. Jacob Graul), Margaret (married to Jacob Zimmerman),
Susanna (married to Frederick Gossler) and Magdalena (married to Michael
Lutz).

Miles Rifle Regiment.
The Pennsylvania Rifle Regiment of Col. Miles and the Pennsylvania
Battalion of Musketry, under Col. Atlee, were embodied strictly for the
defense of the Provinces of Pennsylvania, by the prudent foresight of its
House of Representitives, at the suggestion of the Committee of Safety
On March 5, 1776, the House resolved to levy 1,500 men, officers
included, to serve until January 1778, and, on the 6th, decided that 1,000
of the levies should be riflemen, divided into two battalions of 500 each,
the remainder to be a battalion of musketmen.
Nearly the whole of the rifle regiment was raised in about six weeks, and
rendezvoused at Marcus Hook. It was made up, largely, of
Pennsylvania-Germans. The following companies were nearly all such:
Capt. Lewis Framer, from various counties, Capt. Henry Shade, Northampton
County, First Battalion; Capt. Peter Grubb, Jr., Lancaster County, Capt.
Henry Christ, Jr., Berks County, Second Battalion; with considerable number
in nearly all other companies.
On July 16, the regiment had marched to Amboy and joined Gen. Mercer. It
was followed by Atlee's musketry battalion on the 21st.

Capt. Henry Christ, Jr.
A man of prominence at Reading who showed a proper enthusiasm in the first
movement at the outbreak of the Revolution. He was appointed by Edward
Biddle, as one of the Committee on Correspondence. On March 9, 1776, he
was commissioned Captain in Col. Samuel Miles' Pennsylvania Rifle Regiment,
participated in the battle of Long Island, and other operations of that
splendid organization, until March 19, 1777, when he resigned.
In 1777 he was placed on the Committee to collect arms, etc. Upon his
return from the army he was appointed a Justice of the Peace for Reading,
and in 1784 he was reappointed for another term of seven years. He also
served as Recorder, Register and Clerk of the Orphans' Court of the county
from 1777 to 1789; he was also Clerk of the Quarter Sessions for 1779.
He died at Reading in August 1789, and left a large estate.
