Snapping Turtle Laying Eggs Series (5 photos)

Andrew Haydon Park, Ottawa
Small female right beside the path decided to lay her eggs this morning. She had just started digging when I came along.

Can't a girl have some privacy? At this point she'd been working for 45 minutes
just using her back feet to dig and scoop out the wet dirt.

After more than an hour she finally stopped digging. This egg is falling into the hole which looked about 8"/20cm deep.

Another egg on the way. There were more than a dozen laid, one about every 30 seconds.

The end. This amazing event took one and a half hours with me leaning/hiding behind a pine tree the whole time.

FANTASTIC series Linda. Great experience too. I watched this same happening with my Grandson once at our cottage. This turtle is at least smarter and didn't lay her eggs in hard gravel or rock.

Phenomenal series of shots! Your patience was well rewarded. I am so glad she was there and not trying to cross a road. I find snappers very endearing. They are so ancient looking...

Great series of shots. Nice timing to 'catch' the actual egg laying.
