building Drypool bridge.jpg

Scanned from a glass negative. The original was broken and in very poor condition, requiring extensive repair. It shows, I beleive, the construction of Hull's Drypool Bridge across the river Hull, date unknown but probably early 1900. Would be grateful if anyone has info about this picture.

(I said "warehouse on the right" - I meant "warehouse on the left")

I forgot the image links too - here they are https://picasaweb.google.com/104530561839114409128/NorthBridgeHull?authkey=Gv1sRgCLbKgPCV093DBA&feat=directlink

Hi. In the background can be seen the current North Bridge (rolling lifting 'Scherzer' type) - this was built in the 1920/30s ( seehttp://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/Details/Default.aspx?id=387563 ) so the photo must be after that. The warehouse on the right is still there too (converted to flats as 'Northbridge Apartments')

The construction work appears to be just a few meters south of the warehouse - I'm 99% certain that this is a photo of the dismantling of the old north bridge (a swing bridge) which the current one replaced. It connected Charlotte Street and Witham - today the roads that connected it are still there - you can see on this maphttp://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ie=UTF8&ll=53.747245,-0.329389&spn=0.001245,0.003433&t=h&z=19

For a while both bridges existed - I don't know when the old one was demolised but it had gone by the 1950s.

Here's a link to two (tiny/poor quality) images of the old bridge - in the second one the new bridge can be seen raised in the background. In the first one the warehouse is recognisable.

I'd put the date between 1930 and 1940 - can't be more specific - it might be possible to find an exact date from the archives of the Hull Dail Mail.
