Geese ~ March 21

New London, Minnesota

Right now the geese are passing through and they always stop by our Mill Pond, so for the time being they make an easy subject. Hopefully I'll find a bit of inspiration in something else tomorrow but for today this was the best I could come up with...

An interesting side-note: The male and female Canadian Goose look almost exactly the same, with the key visible (to us anyway) difference being that the male is about a pound heavier than the female. (In this case I believe the female is in the foreground.) A pair is believed to mate for life (around 20 years). At one time they were believed to be extinct; a pair was spotted in Rochester, MN in 1962 and they've been growing in population ever since. Many communities in Minnesota ban feeding them as they can be a nuisance, but as far as I know thus far it's still legal to do so in New London...

Great shot of this couple. We have a lot of these geese all over the baylands.
Neat to see the young ones feeding and huddling together.

Amazing they were almost extinct considering how thick they are around here. They're so photogenic; you can't resist 'em.

Great shot and interesting commentary. I might add that many don't migrate anymore which leads to the overpopulation that causes the problems in communities.

Very nice shot, great lighting. OBTW the rebound on the Eastern shore of MD has them at over 80,000 birds this year when they had only planned for around 30,000. -BJ
