A Flare for Steam Engines

Willmar, Minnesota

Great Northern Steam Engine Number 2523 (4-8-2) was the last of 28 locomotives built by Baldwin Locomotive Works http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baldwin_Locomotive_Works for the Great Northern Railway and now resides on permanent display at the Kandiyohi Historical Society in Willmar, MN. Also known as the "Empire Builder" its purpose was to speed up mainline passenger service. Eventually the P-2 class locomotive was replaced by the more powerful S-2 class, but the P-2 class found a second life as freight locomotives until finally being retired in 1955.

Locomotive and tender are 94 feet in length, weigh 617,000 pounds and stand 15 feet 10 inches tall from the rails to the top of the stack. Number 2523 was an oil burner and could exert up to 57,580 pounds of tractive effort. The drive wheels are 73 inches in diameter.
