The Black-Capped Chickadee is found in the Northern United States and southern Canada spreading along the Western Canadian coast to Alaska. They tend to prefer the cooler areas. Whereas the Carolina Chickadee is found more in the southeastern United States.
Chickadees are tame, friendly birds that love to come to yard feeders. They have a very complex social structure for birds and have the largest number of recognized calls - at least 15 - to keep the society functioning. There is a definite hierarchy among the birds, and each waits his turn at the bird feeder until the birds that are higher in the order have finished.
Chickadees don't tend to migrate, but are year round residents.
