Mount Rainier is the highest peak in the Cascade Range and Cascade Volcanic Arc at 14,411 feet (4,392 m). The mountain and the surrounding area are protected within Mount Rainier National Park. With 26 major glaciers, Mount Rainier is the most heavily glaciated peak in the lower 48 states with 35 square miles (91 km²) of permanent snowfields and glaciers. The summit is topped by two volcanic craters, each over 1,000 feet (300 m) in diameter with the larger east crater overlapping the west crater. Geothermal heat from the volcano keeps areas of both crater rims free of snow and ice, and has formed an extensive network of glacier caves within the ice-filled craters.

雷尼尔山是世界上最雄伟的山岭之一，从山顶向四周望去，可以看到1500米以下的景色全被隐没在雾海之中，只有较高的山峰探出一角，仿佛海中的浮岛。山顶终年被冰雪覆盖，有27道冰河向四周喷射而出。另外，在山腹的草原地带，每到7、8月间，冰雪融化，花开满山，成了一片美丽的花海。

山麓下是一大片茂密的原始森林，湖泊、瀑布错落其间。位于东面山坡的埃蒙斯冰川是美国最大的冰川。冰川夏季消融的雪水，汇成湍急的溪流和倾泻的瀑布，水流声响彻山谷。

公园里的“天堂”及“日出”两处景点极受人们的珍视和保护。“天堂位于雷尼尔山西南方，地势极高。这里除了有美丽的山景外还有潺潺的流水和清澈的瀑布和湖泊，在“天堂”的北边还有著名的天堂河。

位于雷尼尔山北部的“日出”是雷尼尔山国家公园内海拔最高的景点，在这里不但可以欣赏到冰河的壮丽奇景，还可以眺望公园内秀丽的贝克山以及太平洋。
