This is a story about a very devoted couple preparing for and raising their young. We hung a wren nestbox from the eve of the house about 2-3 feet from the den window enabling us to watch them up close and personal. There was constant trips from the ground and trees back to the nest with an insect so often that I decided to time them...every twenty seconds one or the other were feeding the young. They would take a break then were right back at it again. It seemed they would become frazzeled, if there's such a word, but they kept it up! Once Mom came back with a grasshopper that was so big I thought the babe was going to choke on it. However, she stayed right there and watched to be sure he could get it down. I was so entranced that I did not even think to pick up the camera until it was too late.
We had a weeks vacation coming up and I just knew they would fledge after we pulled out of the driveway, but thankfully as I was just getting the last things ready to load the car my husband called to come quick. He said they were going to fledge and sure enough as soon as I picked up the camera out hopped one on top of the birdhouse. Talk about making my day! Well, we were a little late leaving, but I did manage to get a few shots of the fledglings before leaving.
Hope you enjoy their story!
P.S. Mom is already nesting again in the box. The last picture was taken just the other day when one of the juvies saw Mom go in the nestbox and he flew up to check it out. She poked her head out as if to say..."you've had your turn being a baby, now's it's time for more of your brothers and sisters to come into this world."
