In 1939 the National Oil Proprietary Limited extracted oil from shale at the Glen Davis works in the Capertee Valley about 135 KM miles west of Sydney. Although regarded as strategic for Australia's wartime oil supply, the venture was plagued by technical difficulties. The plant was closed down in 1952 because the cost of extracting oil from shale became too expensive.
