This diving duck is very much at home in the cold cascading rapids. When feeding, it typically faces up-stream, dives and swims upstream usually surfacing a short distance up-stream from where it started only to have the current take it past the start point of its dive. It repeats this until finally reaching the end of its run/stream; then, it flies back to the start of the run and repeats the process over and over until it has caught and consumed enough food. Then it is time for relaxation, preening and courting when love is in the air.
