Eleven sequence images showing the young Owlet struggling to get off the forest floor and up higher in a tree, all under the watchful eye of Mom, and probably Dad, although I did not see Dad. The young owlet appears to have left the nest cavity overnight or early this morning. I first saw it as shown in the top image, after first spotting Mom up higher.
Top Image: The young owlet had supposedly climbed to this height, about 2.5 meters off the ground when it presumably heard me approach.
The owlet then, with some considerable effort, slowly turned around to get a look at me.
It then looks up at Mom as if to ask "Is it OK to talk to this stranger?"
I think Mom said "No!", but the little owlet nevertheless decided to give me a good look-over before......
..... turning towards the tree trunk, looking up and seemingly deciding to ................
.....try and climb up higher using all the tools at his disposal, that is, beak, talons and underdeveloped wings as there had been no room in the tree cavity nest for it to exercise its wings.
Here it seems to just walk up the trunk whilst flapping its already substantial but unexcercised wings.
Not making much upward progress, it starts to hug the tree trunk again.
Here it rests for awhile with extra support from the far wing to hold it against the tree trunk.
Hung-over and exhausted, it remains resting like this with the already substantial wings droopped down. Then, ...................
...............it falls/flutters to the ground, turns and looks at me. It appears to be exhausted, but apparently no worse for wear as it immediately tries to climb a fallen, low-sloping, tree trunk. Subsequently, it tried to climb another smal vertical tree.
I stayed a good distance away at all times. At one point I thought that perhaps the owlet needed some help as it was very hot and the owlet was panting hard; however, with Mom and Dad nearby and being alone, I wasn't about to chance a two-pronged owl attack from behind.
I decided to leave the scene and not disturb the owlet any further thinking that Mom would probably come down, with me out of the way, and give the Owlet some food. The following morning I found the owlet up some 15 meters perched in the shade on a small horizontal branch where Mom brought it a Chickadee for lunch.
