20160527-1 1561 SERIES - Piping Plover.jpg

Eastern Ontario

Three images of one of three Piping Plovers found on the beach. This one is tending the nest inside an enclosed wire cage which is located near the centre of a roped-off area along the beach. The roped-off area is intended to keep Birders and Photographers at a reasonable distance from the rare/endangered Plovers.

The rare nesting Plovers (for our area) can come and go as they please through the cage wires which are there to protect them from predators. Two of the three Plovers residing here were foraging for food along the water's edge away from the nest area enclosure.

Top image; Front view of the Plover on the nest.

The nest-sitting Plover stretching its legs for a short walk within the wire enclosure.

Back on the nest after a very brief break, now looking the opposite way.

Great presentation...it looks in jail this poor guy even if we know it's for its protection :))

Good to see the plovers are being protected. Hope you have twice as many next year.

Such a beautiful bird! Is the killdeer related to it? Wondered because they look similar to me.

Excellent that they are protected and don't mind the cage. A rare event to see them.

These are wonderful shots, giving us a peek into the nesting of these birds, as well as the steps taken to protect them.
