20150711 277 SERIES - Belted Kingfisher.jpg

Ottawa West

Finally some shots of a Belted kingfisher this year. It was initially very far away, then came to a closer perch, but still far off. I was using my D7200 DX camera and internal 1.3 crop for a total crop of 1.95. In addition I decided to try adding a 1.4 T.C. as the light was good; thus giving an equivalent 35 mm focal length of about 1,100 mm. I was shooting hand-held, but was able to support my arms on a railing. The, as posted, images are cropped an additional 40% in P.S..

Top image: It appears that the Kingfisher notices something in the water below.

A quick take-off flight shot.

A second flight shot before the Kingfisher disappears behind the tall reeds.

Nikon NIKON D7200,Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR AF
1/2500s f/8.0 at 550.0mm iso900 (Total 35 mm equivalent focal length = 1100mm using Dx camera, plus 1.3 crop plus 1.4 T.C.) full exif

Superb serie.

Really good, Hank. The 1.4x on the 80-400mm does not soften up the images too badly at all. Congratulations on catching this most elusive of birds.
