20131001 026 SERIES - Wood Duck.jpg

Ottawa West

BERRY-PICKING WOOD DUCK.
Seven images of a Wood Duck foraging for berries in the low shrubs along the shore of the lake, next to a road. This was the first time I had ever seen them doing that, but perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised for, after all, they are Wood Ducks, they nest in tree cavities, they often roost in tree branches and their main food consists of acorns and other seeds - so why not berries.

Top image: As we first saw the Wood Duck in a low shrub. Note, the blue berries in the left bottom and left top, also a bunch below the duck.

Looks like he spotted the bunch of berries below him.

Reaching down to get a berry. That's quite a reach for a Duck whilst balancing himself on a branch.

But, he's got one! Note, he flaps his wings to get back up.

"Now, lets see if I can't find some that are easier to reach."

An other balancing act.

Looks like he spotted an other bunch. Note, the clawed webbed feet grabbing on to the branch.

The following day I saw several other Wood Ducks picking berries in the low shrubs.

I'm always amazed when I see a "woodie" in a tree...
Those webbed feet certainly were not designed for roosting in trees...
Nice series of images...
