20120126 1438 1r1 Gray Jay.jpg

Algonquin Park

WELL BANDED

This and several other Gray Jays had two different colour bands on each leg, for a total of four bands. Does that mean it has been caught four times and a different colour band applied each time, maybe each year. Seems a bit much to me and probably hard on the bird??? Any suggestions as to why so many bands.

Thanks to Penny for the following links and info Re the banding of the Gray Jays at Algonquin Park:

Terrific capture, Hank. That's a lot of colored band it has collected.

Nice frontal capture and all fluffed up, possibly due to the cold?

I always wonder about the banding too when I see birds that have been caught, as this one has! The details of your shot are excellent; the bands are a little distracting!

Gray jays have been studied for years and years in Algonquin Park and I can't remember the exact sequencing of bands, but I can probably point you to someone who does know. A gorgeous shot!

I would have no clue,Hank. I agree with you,it has to be hard on the bird.. Very nice capture...
