My Backyard

AN EARLY MORNING VISITOR

As my wife opened our kitchen window curtains a few mornings ago, she saw this bird sitting on our fence watching the bird feeders. Luckily, we had not yet put on the lights, hence we could see the hawk but it couldn't see us as it was darker inside than out. At my wife's call, I quickly grabbed my camera and was able to get off about a dozen shots through the kitchen window. Even then the hawk could hear the clicking of the camera shutter which made it turn its head from side-to-side. It finally flew off, but not before I changed to my 300mm f2.8 lens and was able to get a few shots with it. Since it was still quite dark out, I upped the ISO initially to 3200, then down to 2500 at which this hand-held shot was taken.

This shot is a bit soft;however, I'll take it as it is the first photo of a Sharp-shinned Hawk for me, and that right at home.

They do love watching the feeders! And they know what time the birds come to visit, too! Now that you know...maybe you'll see it again :) Nice catch, Hank! A wonderful first!
