20111118 064 SERIES - White-tailed Buck.jpg

Ottawa

Three images of the wounded buck hot in pursuit of one of the does. The doe is giving it a run for its money.

Top image: The buck seems to be frustrated by the evasiveness of the doe. He takes a brief break from the chase and in frustration appears to rear up and snap off a high branch. (I've previously seen other bucks do the same whilst chasing a doe.) Note, the comment by Tom: "Hank! In the first and second image he's rubbing scent on the tree marking his territory" Thanks Tom.

A close-up shot of the rearing buck.

After a brief interruption, the buck resumes the chase. Note the patch of bare skin just above its left shoulder. This is the location of the exit wound he incurred last fall. The spot must still be itchy and he must still be licking it.

Maybe he's trying to put a branch in his antlers to make them look bigger? :) Sure is a pose I've never seen captured before! Nice series, Hank!

This guy is a survivor. I sure he'll find some doe to past his strong genes along. Great shots!
