Witless Bay Ecological Reserve

Three images of an other section of rocky shore inhabited by Common Murres, Kittiwakes, Razorbills, Puffins etc.

Top image: A view taken at 75 mm. Note there are Puffins in the grassy area in the upper left corner, then a wide band of mostly Common Murres, then a narrow band of Kittiwakes in the middle, then a mixture of Murres, Kittiwakes and Razorbills near the bottom. There are also some Herring Gulls near the top.

A vertical crop of the centre area of the top image to show more detail. (That top row of Kittiwakes might want to keep their umbrellas handy to protect against any unwanted projectiles from the Murres above.)

A shot of the same area as images 1 & 2 taken at 420 mm. This more clearly shows the heavy concentration of Murres and the Kittiwakes below them.

A great series of shots nicely presented and well documented. Looks like there may be a housing shortage before long. V

A property of this rugged mountain terrain seems to be that it provides a natural camouflage for the myriad birds there. Only as you increase the magnification does one notice the teeming birds. V

Nicely done and documented, Hank. Their fossils should be well stratified in future eons.
