After spending about three hours at Cape St Mary's shooting the various birds right from the Main Land, we checked in at Rosedale Manor B&B in Placentia, a mere half hour drive from Cape St Mary's. The remainder of the day/evening we spent exploring Placentia.
The following morning we set out early for Witless Bay & Bay Bulls to visit The Witless Bay Ecological Reserve. This reserve has been described as being one of nature's greatest wonders anywhere. The reserve is comprised of four small islands. In the summer the four islands are home to millions of sea birds that nest and raise their young there. Humpback and Minke Whales also swim in the bay. The Whales and sea birds are best seen from tour boats which operated from the mainland and can reach the reserve in 20 to 30 minutes. Zodiac tours are also available. They permit closer access to the islands. Except under special permit, one is, however, not allowed on the islands.
We arrived at Bay Bulls at about 10:00 AM and since the weather was good, we decided to immediately book an 11:00 AM tour on a catamaran before checking in at Elaine's B&B by the Sea. Good thing we did since the next day it was very windy.
We initially approached one of the larger islands; however, just as we approached, Whales were spotted and the boat changed course to pursue the whales. We saw at least three Humpback Whales, two adults and one young one. The next several postings are some of my whale shots.
In the above shot, a whale breaches the surface right near the shore of one of the islands.
