20110630 - 1 248 SERIES - Common Murres.jpg

Cape St Mary's Ecological Reserve, NL

Four images of Common Murres at Cape St Mary's. Reportedly there are some 10,000 nesting pairs of Common Murres at Cape St Mary's.

Top image: Large colony of Murres on the main land, just to the left of Bird Rock which is largely occupied by the Northern Gannets.

Closer view of the colony shown in the top image. Note the fog. It moved in/out at will and at times became too thick for taking shots.

Close view of a small group of Murres. Note their tendency to face the rock and have their backs to the edge of the ledges. I've been told (perhaps in jest) that this is their way of circling the wagons thus allowing them to collectively aim their artillery (poop) at any intruders climbing the cliffs.

Thousands of Common Murres seen on the ocean all along the shore.
