20101230 112 Leucistic Black-capped Chickadee HP xxx.jpg

Ottawa

I'm finishing my posting for 2010 with some observed oddities in nature. I've previously posted other examples of these oddities.

Top Image: A leucistic Chickadee. Compared to a normal Chickadee which has black legs, feet and beak and a black cap, this chickadee's legs, feet and beak are pink and its head is mostly white. About three years ago I saw and posted a Chickadee with a totally white tail.

A melanistic, totally black, Chipmunk, described by some experts as a once in a life-time sighting.

A leucistic American Crow. This Crow's wing edges are white compared to being totally black in normal crows.

A balding Northern Cardinal. This is perhaps not so unique as it is probably a normal moulting process; however, I've not seen one moult like this.

A bald R-w Blackbird. Also, not so unique, but it looks rather odd and again, I've not seen one moult like this before.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!
