20101215 104 W-t Deer ( HP+unsharp mask-2blue+1red NX2-4) SERIES.jpg

Old Quarry Trail

Four images of the 10 point Buck that was wounded some four weeks ago. All images are the same except for the after processing in Photoshop Elements and Nikon's NX-2. The image was taken yesterday, the first sunny day after a couple days of snow. I made two big "No-No" mistakes that day; namely, I set my White Balance to "Incandescent Light" instead of "Sun" and even though I checked my histogram frequently, I forgot to periodically check the images. This resulted in all images taken that day being very blue and since I only shoot in jpeg, this presented a big problem.

I discarded most of the images from that day but decided to do some editing on a few to see if I could salvage them. The following is the result for one of the images. The first three are as modified and the last, as shot image, is included for comparison. I'm posting these to show that not all may be lost when making a basic field error. All three modified images are slightly cropped, sharpened and adjusted for brightness and shadows.

Top Image: In addition to the above, I decreased the "Blue" and increased the "Red" in Elements and then did some local brightening in NX2.

For this image I also decreased the "Blue" and increased the "Red" in Elements. I then went to NX2 and made some global and local "Control Point" adjustments.

For this image, in addition to the above, I used a soft warming filter in Elements to soften the image and to remove the blues hues/tones. I then also did some local darkening and brightening in NX2.

Except for some slight cropping, this is the as shot image.

Your comments w.r.t which of the top three images you like best will be appreciated.

ADDED NOTE:

Thank you all for your comments re: my salvaged posting of yesterday. The response was terrific. There were a total of 31 comments and 22 expressed their preference of the three modified images. A few couldn't quite decide and picked two images and some of you provided suggestions and links to enhancing images. A few even went to the trouble of doing some enhancing on one or two of the images and then forwarded those to me via email along with their suggestions. THANK YOU ALL.
The choices expressed for the preferred image were:

9 picked the first image; 7 the second and 6 the third. My wife and I had also picked the first.

other sizes: small medium original auto

I am really glad that this wounded buck seems to be doing much better. I like all of them, but the middle one is the one I'd choose if I had to!

Just love it .

Wow, tough call. Second seems the most natural to sunlit fur, while the third seems to have a more natural sky blue. That being said - overall the second one; as viewed on an iMac.

Very creative. My favourite is the last one. :-)

I go for the 3rd down and the top one Hank,to me the deers coat in the 3rd one is pretty true colour, but only your eye saw the colour of the sky as it was? Good work!!!

And I thought I was the only one who made this kind of mistake. Thanks for showing what can be done to save the image.

I like the first one the best. Any way you could soften it a bit?

I like the first image more. Great work Hank. Vote.
silvia marmori17-Dec-2010 12:19
i choose the third..
even i like always slightly saturated colours (my fav would be the first), i feel the third reflects more the winter's soul in its colder tones...
