20100121 058 Northern Saw-whet Owl.jpg

Amherst Island, Ontario

This is one of the smallest owls. It weighs only about 74 grams. I've photographed and have seen one only twice before, both in 2009. Presently we also saw two. The above image was of the first one we found. It is the best shot I could get as the owl was sleeping and pretty well hidden behind branches. The second one was located in the same tree as the Boreal owl of which I've been posting images the past two days. The little Saw-whet was only about three feet above the somewhat larger larger Boreal. Again it was well hidden behind branches; hence, I did not get a shot of it.

These guys are always a challenge because they are invariably hidden amongst the branches. It's most frustrating to find just the right angle to eliminate as many branches as possible. I think they do it on purpose.
