Samuel E. Tobias was born March 12, 1861 and died November 11, 1927. Sam Tobias was an accomplished gunsmith by 1882. While working with William Hackney, and after Hackney retired, Tobias obtained Hackney's rifling machine and built several gain twist muzzle loading rifles which were popular with Schuetzen Clubs in the area of Dayton, Ohio. He later converted the rifling machine to use a straight gain twist. Tobias was also a pioneer in the installation of .22 Caliber liners in both pistol and rifle barrels. Tobias is considered as one of the first gunsmiths to convert the .50 Caliber 1871 Remington Rolling Block pistol to a modern single shot rim fire or center fire pistol. This gallery details one of his .44 Russian Remington Rolling Block pistols in detail.
