Myron F. Roberts and his 1882 No. 16 Maynard

Myron F. Roberts obtained his 1882 No. 16 Maynard in caliber .38-50 with a 32 inch tapered round barrel from the Massachusetts Arms Company. He also purchased a .22 R.F. barrel with Marlin Short Globe Windage Adjustable front sight at the same time. M.F. Roberts attended the National Rifle Club match held at Vernon, Vermont on May 26 and 27, 1886. The riflemen were photographed by A.C. Gould on the 27th. Unfortunately Roberts did not compete. There are several articles in Shooting and Fishing regarding his excellent offhand marksmanship. But for one reason or another, he allowed a small amount of rust to accumulate in the barrel and contacted the Massachusetts Arms Company to clean it out via lapping. The two letters, we presume drafts as they have the same date, in the gallery demonstrate his dissatisfaction with the results. His son, Myron Gould Roberts, later used the .22 R.F. barrel to win some medals spanning the years 1911 to 1914 while at the New York Military Academy. We can testify that the rifle is still a serious shooter - two of our five shot groups are shown at the end of the gallery.
