John P. Lovell established in Boston in 1840. He continued working alone at 27 Dock Street until between 1860 and 1868. It is during this time that we believe this rifle shown was produced. After 1860 the firm name was changed to J. P. Lovell & Sons. The firm was merged with Iver Johnson about 1868, but the Lovell's continued at the same location until 1873. Lovell and Sons continued working at various addresses after 1873. John P. Lovell died in 1897.
This rifle is a high quality target rifle that must have come in its own case. Note that there
is no provision for a ram rod or cleaning rod. Therefore, these pieces must have been carried
in the rifle case or a shooting kit. We imagine that the case would also contain tools, such as a nipple wrench, appropriate screwdrivers, caps, and powder. The rifle has a 34 inch barrel and is in .45 caliber. One particularly nice feature is the very finely made single set trigger. The rifle also features a nicely done hooked breech as well. LOP is 14 inches and weight is 9 pounds.
