This gallery displays a Kirkwood & Mortimer single shot rifle made in very limited numbers by David Kirkwood and Henry Mortimer of Boston Mass ca. 1875-1880, or was possibly made by David Kirkwood when he operated alone ca. 1882-1888. Rifle is unmarked except for some cryptic letters stamped on bottom barrel flat under the forearm. There is a similar example in STILL MORE SINGLE SHOT RIFLES by James Grant on page 96. There is also an article in the book 100 YEARS OF SHOOTERS AND GUNMAKERS OF SINGLE SHOT RIFLES BY Gerald Kelver on page 134. We don't know the caliber at this time. Rear tang sight base (if that is what it is) looks unfinished. Maybe one of the viewers will recognize what it should look like finished and let us know. Kirkwood’s work seems to be of the highest quality with nice engraving.
I have a Kirkwood & Mortimer rifle in 45-70. The buttstock is missing entirely and all I have of the rear tang sight is the threaded hole in the tang. I would be interested in any additional information that you have found out regarding the missing tang sight and a photo if the entire buttstock would be a great help to me when I make the buttstock for my rifle. Photos of the Kirkwood rifle are hard to come by and I have never seen another rifle "in the flesh".
