Michael Dorrler Presentation Stevens Rifle

Michael Dorrler was a famous 200-yard, off-hand rifle shooter in the 1890-1910 time period. He held the record in 1897 with a 2283 out of 2500 possible, again in 1899 with a 2246 out of 2500 possible and in 1900 when he shot a 2257 it was claimed it would be years before that record was broken. W.G. Hudson broke that record in 1903 with an amazing score of 2301 out of a possible 2500. Not much is known about the rifle in this gallery other than it is marked as "Presented To Michael Dorrler By The J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co., Chicopee Falls, Mass". There are many interesting things to study on the rifle, one of the most notable is the method used to mat the barrel surface. Another is the finger spurs on the trigger guard, and the pointed tip on the Schuetzen Buttplate. It was obviously a rifle designed for shooting by a master of the craft of off-hand rifle marksmanship.
