Remington No.1 sporting heavy barrel "Buffalo Rifle", serial #1800. Caliber 44-77 Rem. centerfire (barrel stamped "44 ctge S"). Heavy 30" full octagon barrel measures 1 1/8" at breech, 1 1/16" at the muzzle. Remington combination "open and peep" rear barrel sight, beach folding front sight. Remington single-set trigger.
These long range powerful rifles were used very effectively to kill hundreds of thousands of American buffalo (bison) during the second half of the 19th Century frequently at ranges from 200 to 600 yards. Due to the heavy weight (almost 12 lbs.) this rifle was probably used with a rest or cross sticks. In well used but not abused condition, this rifle probably saw a very colorful western history. See REMINGTON ROLLING BLOCK SPORTING AND TARGET RIFLES by Roy Marcot, chapter 5, for a more complete history and description.
