We hiked a section of the Appalachian Trail (really, we weren’t in Argentina) near Byrd’s Nest Summit in Shenandoah National Park not far from Sperryville, Virginia. We were about a mile down the trail when it curved around a rocky ledge and 25 yards in front of us was this black bear. It scrambled about 15 yards up the rocks, regrouped, checked us out and then meandered down the trail away from us.
