The year 2020 is just around the corner and our 60th reunions with it

* Las Vegas - planned for early October or mid November in 2020 *

Let me know of any other upcoming event(s) involving our classmates

-----------------------------------------------------------
To assist the reunion committee with the choice of venue, it was suggested to do a survey of the classmates for their opinion.
The survey on the website below is volunteered and hosted through my GDrive account.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScFyXMqCTGDC48itTQg0IJMFFmCWKQYcFKPLxKwMnv4m2KbTQ/viewform?vc=0&c=0&w=1

Note that this survey will be done anonymously and we won't know who will be taking part in the survey.
As such it's been requested that you take part in the survey only once to ensure it is as accurate as possible.
At the same time we would like as many as possible take part in the survey to ensure it represents the opinion of the majority.
Also, if you do have a change of heart/mind, it's OK to do the survey again but please do indicate that it is a change and from what.
Remember, the majority opinion will likely determine the choice of venue for the reunion committee.
So also remember, as they say in Hawaii, ' No vote... No grumble '.
Mahalo !

Saw this in the Sunday newspaper.

https://obits.staradvertiser.com/2020/01/19/wanda-kulamanu-au/

Funny how I remembered the name as soon as I saw it, funny since I never had any of her classes.
Didn't realize then and now that she was only 8 years older than us.
She was an Ellis when she started speech classes our junior year at KHS, then became an Au our senior year.

Also saw this article recently in the local newspaper.

https://www.staradvertiser.com/2020/01/17/hawaii-news/board-of-education-nixes-moving-kaahumanu-school-advances-kaimuki-high-redevelopment-plan/?HSA=a363ae2821723652b627e3d471bf56c7670fad69

For me the surprising things weren't that KHS will likely see many changes to the campus or sharing with another high school.
Very interesting but not really surprising.
Those were things that were well overdue.
What surprised me is how low enrollment is now, nearly shocking.
Hard to believe enrollment is far less than half of what we had back when we attended.
I guess it's a matter of the aging generations and students transferring to other schools.
KHS was founded about 77 years ago on the campus of what is now Kaimuki Middle School (our old Kaimuki Intermediate).
But the current campus at the corner of Kaimuki and Kapiolani first saw use in 1950, 70 years ago this year.
The info in the link below states that the school colors of green and gold were adopted in 1950.
But I have a vague memory of the previous 'colors' being two different shades of gray back around that time.
There are also vivid memories of the 'super-duper carnivals' on campus back then.
That was my first introduction to 'Purity Pup Hot Dogs' and I think the waffle hot dog, plus probably many other food items and rides.

Ahh... the flood of memories... will probably revisit some more in blogs to come in this 60th/70th year of things.

Our condolences also to Don and his family.
His wife Evelyn was one of the friendliest spouses at reunions and it would always surprise me that she remembered me at each one.

Mahalo Tom on behalf of our classmates, and the very same to you.

Take care everyone, especially those in the Phillipines, Australia, and other places facing dire occurrences.

Aloha,
Hal

Read today’s obit.
So sorry to hear of Evelyn’s passing.
I only hope she went peacefully.
She really added to the KHS Ohana with her bubbling and gracious personality.
She will be missed.
I will not be able to attend her services as I leave for a trip.
My condolences to you and family.

We are now into the year 2020.
Not sure for all of you but it'll be strange and take some time to remember to write 2020 for me.
It's also hard to believe we will be going towards our 60th KHS 1960 reunion(s) this year.

We've lost many of our classmates the past year and the years before that.
They have left us much too soon and will not be forgotten.
If you do make New Year resolutions, make sure one of them is to not only remember but to connect with the many classmates we still have.

Be safe, take care, and enjoy this new 2020 year.
Hau'oli Makahiki Hou to all !

Aloha,
Hal

To: Hal-KHS60

Harold, it was with great sadness when we heard of Mel's passing since were visiting my sister in LV at the time.
Another great loss and hard to believe that our comical and musically talented Mel Cabang had suddenly left us.
We ran into Mel in LV occasionally however I was truly blessed to have had Mel in my daily KHS classes to enjoy his ever daily antics in class.
Mel was a favorite of English teacher, William Dutcher, who always called on Mel for a presentation and Mr. Dutcher would roar with laughter at Mel's latest act especially the cigar and the Filipino man.
Mel loved working at amusing our classes and in essence was honing his comedic art unbeknownst to us.
I admired Mel for pursuing and accomplishing his goal.
Mel also had a wonderful singing voice and together with his close friend, talented Paul Texeira, made a beautiful singing duo together at our school events.
Like Paul's wife, Miki, recently told me, Mel and Paul are now "jamming together like crazy" up in heaven.
Mel was a gentle soul, always affable, carried a good natured demeanor and never complained, I have never heard an unkind word spoken by Mel.

Melvin Cabang was a truly fine hardworking gentlemen that I and so many others enjoyed his friendship and talent and we will deeply miss Mel always.
Our deepest condolences to Mel Cabang's wife and family from Gerri and Jack Digmon.

Hui, Hal,
Just to clarify, I did not write the post shared like it was from me, as I do not speak like that, ((Damn, more sad news) nor do I know of all the places Mel performed.
I forwarded you that FB post by another person.

My personal note to you just asked if you had heard.
