As Grimaldi et al. (2002) note: "The leaves are shorter, broader, and more crowded than occurs in the most widespread, Cretaceous species, M. †occidentalis; also, the Burmese amber species has the tips of the leaves broadly rounded, not pointed as in M. †occidentalis."
