Pentremites godoni (Defrance), 22 mm, showing preservation of original colour banding. Lower Chesterian, Elwren Formation, Kentucky, USA. Brachioles are well preserved in this specimen. Type 2 colour pattern of Beaver & Fabian (1998). “During life, we hypothesize that a thin leathery integument enclosed the calcite skeleton. The thinness of the skin is unknown; it may have been transparent. Also, it is unknown if the color patterns were exposed on the outer surface of the living animal. However, raised areas on the specimens may well have been observable through the integument. The color patterns are considered to be original because many specimens have identical markings at the same positions. The markings do not appear to be related to any particular lithology or stratigraphic setting, although most of them were collected from shallow marine shales or clays.“
