On the 2nd day, we continued a journey around the city and ended up at the Stedlijk Museum (of modern art) which held a wondeful display of 20th century works, including everything from the de Kooning and Picasso to a film by the American actor Dennis Hopper. Many of the more classical pieces were scheduled to go on exhibit with the Cobra collection in late October, so we were lucky to see them this time.
There's a large tunnel separating two halves of the Rijksmuseum that opens onto a large plaza leading to the Van Gogh and Stedelijk museums. Construction has begun on most of the museum, so only about 1/2 of the total area was open when we were there.
