Statue of Gommateshvara (Bahubali)

Sravanabelgola

This monolithic grey granite statue, the largest free-standing sculpture in India, is 18 meters (58'8") high. It was installed in 982 AD.
According to a plaque on the site, "The stark nudity of the sculpture indicates the absolute renunciation of a Kevalin (one who attains supreme knowledge) and the stiff erect stance (Prathimayoga) itself suggest the firm determination and self control - a Jina."
The staging was erected for the Mahamastakabhisheka ceremony held every twelve years when certain planets align and most recently held shortly before we arrived. The brown color of the statue is a result of the anointing fluids poured over it during the ceremonies.
