Machu Pichu was the last hold of the once mighty Incan empire. Building it deep in the jungles on a mountain top in the Andes kept the Spanish Conquistadors from ever learning of its location. It wasn't until 1911 that it was again "discovered" by Hiram Bingham. http://www.labyrinthina.com/bingham.htm It's one of the most beautiful places I have ever had the pleasure of seeing.
we got lost in the clouds and climbed the wrong mountain
where are the ruins?
As the clouds lifted, we realised that we'd passed them.
perhaps we'd better go back down?
I can't believe we were standing right NEXT to the ruins and missed them!
thus began the long descent back down the mountain
to see the ruins that we had been standing 3 meters from when we took a wrong turn
in the midst at last!
everything in tact...only the roofs are missing
terracing...the Incas were excellent at utilising seemingly space for farming
not the original tree...but it's still a gathering place for mystics
